The Three Essential Elements in Business and Leadership...

life goals Aug 03, 2020

Life is not a race. It’s not a competition.

Slow down, if you want to speed up your results. The three most essential things in life to look after are the 3H’s.

Health, Heart, and Head.

Do you think there is room for this in leadership or the business world? Is this too "Woo Woo" for people looking to grow their career or their business? Can teams really benefit from following this simple mantra?

According to the American Institute of Stress (Jun 22, 2020), 40% of workers reported their job was very or extremely stressful and 25% viewed their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives. 75% of employees believed workers have more on-the-job stress than a generation ago and 29% of workers felt quite a bit or extremely stressed at work.

You just have to do a quick google search to realise these figures apply to many countries around the world including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom to name a few. In the Global Emotional Report (2017), up to 85% of respondents claimed they were not happy at work. This figure can include employees as well as business owners and entrepreneurs.

We then have to ask ourselves what the impact is of all this stress and unhappiness on performance? The American Institute of Stress (Sept 2019) reported that:

  • US businesses lose up to $300 billion yearly as a result of workplace stress.
  • Stress causes around one million workers to miss work every day.
  • Only 43% of US employees think their employers care about their work-life balance.
  • Depression leads to $51 billion in costs due to absenteeism and $26 billion in treatment costs.
  • Work-related stress causes 120,000 deaths and results in $190 billion in healthcare costs yearly.

So, let’s come back to the question. Is there room to look closely at what could be considered, the three most critical areas of our lives when it comes to business and leadership?

Look after your Health, Heart and Head in the right way and everything else will look after itself in terms of your career, team, or business. I have been working with individuals and teams in a coaching capacity for some time now and can tell you there is so much room for this work in a business setting and we have a lot more to do still, given the staggering figures quoted earlier on. It all starts with the recognition from top to bottom as well as bottom-up. Look after these three areas holistically, and watch the performance and results sore.

Let’s look at each area a little more closely;

Health:

We often take our health for granted until it’s too late. The second we don’t have our health, all the simple things in life that really matter will seem extraordinary and we will crave to have it all back. Don’t waste this beautiful opportunity and everything that you have now. In my coaching work, the first thing we start with is health. Why? What is the point of gathering all the “success” and “wealth” in the world if all you are going to do is end up having a heart attack or another major ailment at 40 or 50 years of age, if not younger?

Heart:

We are all connected, and that connection comes from the heart. Whether we realise it or not, we are all here to serve. We need each other and we cannot live without each other. Yet, we close our hearts quickly every time we feel a small pain in order to protect ourselves. You don’t have to be friends or even agree with everyone, but you can send everyone love and always come from a place of compassion. You can get rid of pride, ego, and fear and wish everyone well. We know the workplace is rife with fear and many of our actions are led by this powerful emotion. Why not work on keeping our hearts open to all possibilities to allow the flow of positive energy, rather than closing up, resisting and clogging up the flow.

Head:

Clear the mind. Eliminate the noise. That voice in your head continually generates mountains of “stuff” that if not tackled, can clog your mind. You want clarity of thought. You want to slow down the voice. You want to change the stories and narratives. You really want to have a look at where all the productive and non-productive activities are in your workplace.

Let’s face it, we create so much noise that if you cut out up to 20% of activities in the workplace you may be surprised to see how little impact they have had on your business, leaving you more room for new productive tactics and activities. What we want to achieve is the calmness of mind that will bring the speed of action. Who can truly say they have that?

Live, Love, laugh. Life is not meant to be lived in stress and worry. It’s meant to be fun and fulfilling. Once we let go and stop resisting, we can accomplish so much in our careers, businesses and life.

There is so much more we could go through, so for now, start exploring the three H’s in your life.

How would you like them to be?
