Effective Communication in Leadership: Understanding the Paradigm Behind Your Lens
Every person communicates through a lens, an internal filter shaped by beliefs, experiences, and assumptions. Most of the time, this lens operates outside our awareness, yet it influences everything: how we interpret situations, how we respond under pressure, and how we relate to the people we lead.
In executive environments, this unseen lens becomes one of the most significant barriers to effective communication. Two people can observe the same moment, hear the same words, and still walk away with completely different conclusions. The difference isn’t the situation; it’s the paradigm interpreting it.
Understanding and shifting this internal lens is central to effective leadership development because when your paradigm changes, the quality of your communication and your outcomes change with it.
The Communication Loop: Paradigm → Perception → Projection
As discussed in a recent podcast conversation, every person operates within a predictable communication loop made up of three parts:
1. Your Paradigm: The Lens You Look Through
A paradigm is a deeply ingrained set of habitual thoughts, beliefs and behaviours that operates below conscious awareness and quietly shapes how a person thinks, acts and experiences their life.
Your paradigm is the accumulated sum of your experiences, values, beliefs, and biases. It's the subconscious filter you bring into every conversation and every decision.
2. Your Perception: What You Notice and Interpret
No one takes in the full picture. Your brain filters information based on your paradigm. This is why two people can “see” completely different things in the same moment.
3. Your Communication: What You Express and Project
How you respond: your tone, your words, your decisions, come from what you perceived, not necessarily what was actually said or intended.
This means that when you feel frustrated, dismissed, or triggered by someone’s behaviour, it’s often your paradigm reacting, not the reality of what the other person meant.
Their intention and your interpretation are not always the same.
From Frustration to Fascination: A Leader’s Shift in Perspective
Communication becomes easier the moment we stop assuming our perception is the full truth.
Instead of reacting to the behaviour we think we saw, we pause and examine the lens that shaped our perception. This single shift opens the door to more objective, conscious communication.
The practice is simple: Turn frustration into fascination.
Instead of asking:
“Why are they being so difficult?”
Try asking:
- “What lens am I bringing into this interaction?”
- “What else could this behaviour mean?”
- “What perspective might I be missing here?”
These questions interrupt emotional reactivity and invite curiosity. They move you from judgment to understanding, from defensiveness to connection.
Leaders who master this shift communicate with far greater clarity, compassion, and influence.
Why Paradigm Work Matters for Executive and Team Performance
The most effective leaders aren’t those who always get the message right the first time; they’re the ones who understand themselves well enough to adapt their communication with intention.
When you shift your paradigm, you also shift:
- How you interpret feedback
- How you handle conflict
- How you respond to pressure
- How you engage and empower your team
- How well you influence organisational outcomes
Ultimately, the quality of your leadership is shaped by the quality of the questions you ask yourself and others.
High-quality questions lead to clearer insights, stronger communication, and better decisions.
