Goodbye 2019, Hello 2020

personal development Dec 18, 2019

Goodbye 2019, we are about to part ways.

We are just about to wrap up a great year. 2019 has brought us new adventures, new memories and lots of lessons learnt. We would like to be thankful for everything we have lived this year. Everything we experienced was great learning to take us into 2020 and beyond. If we see everything as an experience, an opportunity for us to learn and remove the bias of it being good or bad, how much more powerful would that be?

Yet so many of us are worriers, and we take things so personally based on our own bias. Life moves quickly, and a lot of the time it may feel like we can barely keep up. Things sometimes don’t go our way, and we internalize those experiences and see them as negative.

The daily changes and sweeping calendars leave our heads buzzing with thoughts and feelings of concern on practically a minute-by-minute basis. Sometimes it’s the small day-to-day things like, “Did I remember to lock the door before I left the house?” or “Did I forget to turn off the stove before work this morning?” Other times, it’s a bit deeper than that. Thoughts more along the lines of – “Am I losing myself in this busy world?” or “How am I going to be able to manage all of my flaws, and how are people perceiving me?”

Sometimes, we don’t even know what exactly we are worrying about. We just have become so addicted to worry, that every little thing can trigger our emotions. Every little thing becomes a problem and every little thing becomes a threat.

Here’s the good news. Despite all the feelings of failure, feelings of discomfort, feelings of just not being enough, and despite all the judgement, we will always have incredible power in us to forge ahead. In the face of our fears and obstacles, we have the power to look towards something greater, once we become consciously aware of our feelings and behaviours.  Once we become aware of the bias we bring to every view point, we can immediately change things around.

Call it the law of attraction, call it prayer, call it blind faith, call it psychology, call it whatever you want…it all boils down to two things: positivity and being able to look at our future goals to create something completely new.

Be Positive, and be Grateful. Let’s thank 2019 for everything it brought us. Because when we remove judgement, we will know that every single interaction, every single experience and every single result was there to help us bridge the gap between where we are today and where we want to get to. Once you start to accept this notion, everything becomes a joy and we are able to embrace a true attitude of gratitude. And the more grateful we are, the more we will allow ourselves to try new things that lead to new results.

So here are 5 simple steps to farewell this year and start 2020 on a high:

1- Spend 15 – 30 minutes writing down all your wins for 2019.  Big or small, don’t stop writing till the alarm goes off. If you have a team do this exercise with them.  Your pen should not leave the paper till the alarm goes off.

2- Celebrate the wins even if it is in a small way. Recognize those around you who have made these wins possible.

3- Assess your wins. Ask yourself/your team, what would I/we like to learn and achieve in 2020?

4- What will I/we Stop, Start, and Continue

5- Set a simple accountability matrix and time frame.

Once you do this, you will be ready to welcome 2020 in a big way with the right mindset. Such a simple yet powerful exercise that will invigorate you and your team.  You will be thanking and celebrating 2019, and ready to welcome all new and unknown adventures, new and unknown beginnings, new and unknown challenges. You and your team will be ready for it all with a great big smile and an open mind.
